Arts & Crafts Furniture Anyone Can Make

By David Thiel

While many 2x4 books offer pretty clunky furniture projects, it doesn't have to be that way. Arts & Crafts furniture designs lend themselves to working with dimensional lumber fairly easily. Working with 1x, 2x and some plywood (all available in home center stores), many attractive furniture pieces (for indoors and outdoors) are not only possible, but simple. This book includes 20 Arts & Crafts inspired furniture and household pieces, built using dimensional lumber from home center stores. Joinery is simple (biscuits, dowels and screws) and require very limited woodworking tools and machinery.

Bill Hylton's Ultimate Guide to the Router Table

By Bill Hylton

The router is one of the most versatile tools in any shop, and router tables make it even more versatile by incorporating it into a stationary platform. The router table opens up a whole new world of using the router that simply can't be done using it freehand. Ultimate Guide to the Router Table starts by giving the reader the option of building their own router table (with plans) or buying a manufactured table (with suggestions on what to look for when buying). In either case, this book gives the woodworker all the information they need to use their router table. Basic router-table knowledge is covered in the first chapter: safety issues, setup fundamentals, feed direction and workpiece control. The next chapters cover specific operations unique to the router table. The woodworker is not only shown how to do an operation, but why to do it in the way explained (and the pitfalls of trying to do it another way). Sidebars and tip boxes will highlight appropriate router bit choices, details on how to construct jigs that can be used in conjunction with the router table and other essential information. Illustrations and close-up photos show procedures clearly. A router is mounted under a table with the business end of the router protruding up through a hole in the table. This enables the user to perform tasks that can't be done with the router hand held. Operations such as edge profiling, making mouldings, cutting lock-miter joints, box joints, rabbets, grooves, splined miters, using templates, pin routing and more can be done using a router table.

Box by Box

By Jim Stack

When it comes to great woodworking projects, it's hard to beat boxes. Using a minimal amount of materials, you can craft wonderful gifts or items for sale. And it's a great opportunity to use those pieces of special wood you've been hoarding. The real trick to successful box making is coming up with the right designs. You want something that's attractive, of course, but you also need a design that suits your particular tools and abilities. In Box by Box, author and woodworker Jim Stack offers up plans for twenty-one boxes, along with step-by-step instructions for making them. They range from lovely, simple creations that a novice can make with just a few hand tools, all the way through designs with drawers and dovetail joinery that will provide experienced woodworkers with an exciting challenge. The selection of boxes in this book offers something more than just lovely projects for woodworkers of every skill level. Taken as a whole, they actually provide a course in woodworking. If you were to begin with the first box a very simple affair consisting of seven simply cut pieces of wood and move right on through the book making each project one after the other, you would end up with a lot more than just a very nice collection of boxes. You would end up with a head full of hard-core woodworking knowledge, and hands that know what to do in the woodshop. In the process of making these boxes, you'll learn how to lay out parts, match grain, saw shapes on the band saw, cut a wide variety of joints with the table saw, router, and handsaw, bookmatch veneers, glue and clamp up assemblies, install hardware, and even do a bit of decorative carving. All of the techniques are very clearly demonstrated in step-by-step fashion in carefully composed photographs. Cutlists are provided, and you get plenty of tips along the way to ensure that your project comes out as it should. Of course you'll pick up on a lot of nifty little tricks along the way, such as using painter’s masking tape on your pipe clamps to prevent them from staining your work pieces during glue-ups. Another thing that's great about these particular boxes is that they're not just variations on a theme. Far from it. Leaf through these pages and you'll see arched-top boxes shaped like treasure chests, oval boxes, traditional boxes with dovetailed corners, a pyramid-shaped box with drawers, a box shaped like a circus tent, and a 20-sided sphere. (That's gotta be fun to assemble!) There's even a box that's modeled after a locking safe, which includes a shop-made tumbler mechanism. Some of them are made to suit particular purposes. There is a lap desk, and a box to display collectible knives, with each resting in its own French-fit recess. There's a box for recipe cards, and one that includes a grid insert for organizing a collection of small items. A lovely dovetailed box designed to hold silverware is destined to become a treasured family heirloom. Of course you'll find a couple of very nice jewelry boxes too. All of it is attractive and sure to provide you with lots of your own design ideas as well. Regardless of your woodworking experience, building these boxes will provide a world of fun and the opportunity to develop lots of new skills. In the process, you'll become a better woodworker bit by bit, and box by box.

Creating Beautiful Boxes w/Inlay Techniques

By Doug Stowe

Doug Stowe is a woodworker with 20 years' experience and an eye for boxes and box making. In a well-presented, concise format he outlines 15 projects illustrated in full color. The designs are open-ended, allowing the available wood to take the lead in a given project. Materials and tool lists are included, and line drawings highlight details the photographs cannot. Solid advice on woodworking, and by extension, life, is included where appropriate. Most of these projects are geared toward the experienced woodworker, but less skilled hobbyists and other general "enjoyers of wood" will also find pleasure here. Gentle in tone but strong in presentation, this book is solidly grounded in practice.

Handplane Basics:  A Better Way to Use Bench Planes DVD

With Christopher Schwarz

While bench planes are the most fundamental handplanes in your shop, they also are the most vexing. Ask two woodworkers how to choose, set up and use your bench planes and you'll get three answers.

After years of historical research and practical bench experience, Editor Christopher Schwarz has found a way to simplify the convoluted bench plane system so you can think for yourself when it comes to these tools. After viewing this DVD you'll know how to select the right size plane for your work. You'll know how to sharpen and set it up so it does the job at hand. And you'll learn how to use the plane so you make perfectly flat and gleaming panels (with the minimum amount of effort).

This DVD doesn't simply spout off a new idiosyncratic way to work with bench planes. Instead Schwarz explains how all the systems work so you can immediately see their strengths and weaknesses and exploit them so you'll do better work.

"Handplane Basics" puts into practice all of the principles explained in the story "Bench Planes:

The System of Three" in this issue of Woodworking Magazine and dives further into the topics of sharpening, setup and use. If you are confused or frustrated by your bench planes, this DVD is just the ticket.

Puzzle Boxes

By Jeff Vollmer

Puzzle Boxes includes a DVD that contains more than 90 minutes of information. Author Jeff Vollmer shows you how to set up your band saw and how to cut, glue up, sand, fit and finish these amazing puzzle boxes. Have you ever thought inside the box? These bandsawn boxes could be the most intriguing and fun projects you've ever made. Author Jeff Vollmer describes his boxes as key–and–slide—cut a dovetail key, cut a slider piece, cut another key, cut another slider. That’s the puzzle or “combination” you use to get to the chamber or heart of the box. Then you cut out the guts of the box to create a chamber. But wait, there's more! Then you cut another box from the guts, then another box or drawer from those pieces, then another and maybe another until things get too small to handle safely. Any type wood can be used to make these boxes—wood with holes, cracks, splits, insect and wormholes, spalting and burls. Jeff calls these flaws “opportunities” to become creative.

Workbenches: From Design & Theory to Construction & Use

By Christopher Schwarz

Every workbench should allow the woodworker to easily work the edges, faces and ends of boards, however most benches built during the last 100 years fail on at least one of these tasks. Workbenches is the only book that shows the reader how to design and build a good workbench and most importantly, how to use it in their shop for all sorts of tasks. This book dives deep into the historical records of the 18th and 19th centuries and breathes new life into traditional designs that are simpler than modern benches, easier to build and perfect for both power and hand tools. Two venerable designs are provided as basic skeletons and the knowledge presented shows woodworkers how to design custom workbenches, perfect for their style and method of woodworking.
