A luthier router bit is a specialized cutting tool used in the craft of guitar and stringed instrument making. It attaches to a router and allows for precise shaping, trimming, and carving of wood components essential to instrument construction. Luthiers commonly use these bits for tasks like routing pickup cavities, control pockets, neck pockets, and binding channels. Some bits are designed for flush trimming body shapes using templates, while others are tailored for delicate edge work or inlay routing.

Because instrument building demands high accuracy and clean cuts, luthier router bits are often chosen for their sharpness, bearing-guided control, and compatibility with fine hardwoods. Whether you're shaping the body of an electric guitar or cutting channels for decorative binding, these bits are indispensable in achieving professional, repeatable results.

Our WL-1220-19 set includes 19 different bearings. Each change in bearings adjusts the cut by .010 when you need a precision fit. Cutter is 1″ Diameter x 5/8″ Kerf with 1/4″ Shank. Two flute carbide tipped. Bearings range from .500 to .880 for binding channels from .250 to .060. Bearings for this bit are all 3/16″ ID.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Are the cutting edges ground on a 5 or 6 degree downcut to reduce tear out?

No.  It was made to the specs of our largest consumer and dealer of this set who felt that this would limit the bit's use.

  • What does the ID diameter of the bearing need to be for your 1220LB binding router cutter ? Also do you have a 59/64 ( .9219 ) OD bearing that will fit the cutter? Thank you

Bearings for this bit are 3/16" ID.  The closest to what you are looking for would be 83037, 3/16" x 7/8".  We have a metric bearing, 83181, which is 5mm x 22mm, but do not know if this would work well.

  • I would require the 1220LB router bit and the bearing with a diameter of .820" for a binding channel width of .090". Is this bearing available separately and what would the bearing number be?

We currently do not sell individual bearings. Sometime in late 2026 they should be available individually.

  • What are the 19 bearings sizes in the set?

Bearings range from .500 to .880 for binding channels from .250 to .060.

Awesome quality!

Having received my binding router and bearing kit, I'm stoked with the quality of the item, the dimension accuracy and the finish that it provides. The downcut angle helps tremendously in avoiding chip out and I have been machining some very old and very dry Walnut with it. Thoroughly recommended.
